MUSUBI: Top Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) from Future Borderlink ALTs

Becoming an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) in Japan is an exciting opportunity but it also comes with many questions.
Did you know that most of the questions we receive are already answered in our FAQ section?👉 https://alt.borderlink.co.jp/faq/
Whether you're still exploring your options or preparing to submit your application, today’s article gathers the most common inquiries we receive from candidates along with clear, updated answers.
Q. How do I apply?
You’d be surprised, we get this question almost every day! With our updated website, the process is now easier and more accessible than ever.
Simply apply via: 👉 https://alt.borderlink.co.jp/how_to_apply/
Choose the appropriate path depending on your current situation:
- Applying from Overseas- Applying from within Japan (for candidates already living in Japan with a valid work or residence visa)
⚠️ Important: Please read all details carefully before applying. The process is different depending on whether you are inside or outside Japan.
Q. Do I need teaching experience?
No. While experience and certifications such as TEFL/TESOL/CELTA are valuable, many ALT positions are open to first-time teachers.
At Borderlink, we mainly look for:
- Strong communication skills- A positive, flexible attitude
- Interest in education and supporting students
Even if you do not have formal teaching experience, informal (volunteer) work is also a great way to increase your exposure with students and a teaching environment.
To be eligible for visa sponsorship, you would also require the following:
- 12 years of education where English was the main language of instruction used for all classes (i.e. all classes were taught primarily in English)
Q. What level of Japanese do I need?
Good news: High Japanese proficiency is not required for most ALT roles.
That said, ask yourself this:
"If your students are learning English, why not learn Japanese too?"
It not only enriches your daily life, but also helps you understand firsthand the challenges your students face when learning a foreign language. Start as soon as today to pick up useful Japanese phrases to facilitate communication with your Japanese co-teachers.
Q. I applied through the website but never heard back. What’s my status?
Rest assured we have received your application, and we review all submissions.
However, due to the high volume of applications, we are only able to contact candidates who pass our initial screening process. If successful, you will hear back within one week of applying.
Q. What does an ALT actually do?
ALTs work in public schools across Japan, supporting English education alongside Japanese teachers. If you’re familiar with Eikaiwa teaching, the ALT role is different in structure, responsibilities, and school environment.

- Opportunities to improve your teaching skills
- Assistance with housing and medical matters
