About
Celebrated for cultural significance as one of Japan’s ancient capitals, Nara is a place where the past comes alive. Major sights of interest include Todai-ji Temple, which houses the Great Buddha (Daibutsu), one of the largest bronze statues in the world. The prefecture is dotted with other historic temples and shrines, such as Kasuga Taisha, known for its thousands of lanterns, and the ancient Horyu-ji Temple, which holds some of the oldest wooden structures in the world. Nara’s traditional gardens, such as Isuien Garden, offer a glimpse into Japanese landscape design. Nara Park, which surrounds Todai-ji, is most famous for its hundreds of free-roaming deer that are considered sacred and add to the park's tranquil atmosphere. Not just a great place to visit, Nara is also an excellent place to live for its convenient placement in central-west Japan.
