About

Located on the eastern edge of the Kansai region, Shiga is perhaps best known for the body of water that it encompasses- the mighty Lake Biwa. Japan's largest freshwater lake, Biwa’s serene waters are surrounded by scenic parks and historic temples, including the Enryaku-ji Temple, a significant site of Japanese Buddhism located on Mount Hiei. The prefecture's traditional craft, Shigaraki pottery, is one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, and its distinctive rustic and earthy ceramics are highly valued. Shiga's rich history is also reflected in its ancient temples and well-preserved historical sites, such as the beloved Hikone Castle, which holds the distinction of being one of the five castles listed as a National Treasure.
