【About Higashimurayama City (東京都東村山市)】
Higashimurayama is a historic city in western Tokyo that offers a peaceful retreat from more crowded central area while remaining deeply rooted in Japanese pop culture and heritage. It is home to Tokyo’s oldest building, the Shofukuji Temple Jizodo (a national treasure). Its proximity to the scenic Sayama Hills has given it a reputation as the "green lung" of Tokyo. The city is defined by its vivide landscapes, including Kitayama Park’s iris gardens and the Hachikokuyama Park hills, which famously inspired the setting for Studio Ghibli’s My Neighbor Totoro. It also has local specialties to sample like Kuro-Yakisoba. If you'e looking to work in a cleaner, greener part of Tokyo, you'll want to make Higashimurayama your teaching destination in 2026.
