MUSUBI: Enjoy Nature - Hiking in Mt. Okutama

People flock to Tokyo to embrace its metropolitan vibes, bustling streets, and modernity. However, located in the western part of Tokyo lies a beautiful mountain that is a perfect getaway for those who are tired of the concrete jungles of Tokyo and to enjoy nature at its finest.
Mt. Okutama is easily accessible to people living or visiting Tokyo, which makes it popular choice for hikers. To find your way to the starting point, you would have to take the Ome line in Tachikawa station and then stop at Okutama station.
Mt. Okutama is easily accessible to people living or visiting Tokyo, which makes it popular choice for hikers. To find your way to the starting point, you would have to take the Ome line in Tachikawa station and then stop at Okutama station.

One of the notable aspects of hiking in Mt. Okutama is the variety of trails to choose from. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a beginner, there's a path for everyone. The trek offers scenic views, dense forests, tranquil rivers, and an opportunity to reconnect with nature.
Okutama is home to a diverse flora and fauna, a treasure trove for nature enthusiasts. As you hike up through the forested slopes, you may spot wild boar, Japanese macaques, and a variety of bird species. The mountain's native flora is equally intriguing, featuring pristine cherry blossoms in spring, vibrant foliage in autumn, and cooling streams to refresh hikers during the hot summer months.

At the end of the hike, you are greeted with a magnificent view of lake Okutama. There you can rest your weary legs and enjoy some local foods. Okutama is particularly known for growing wasabi. You can also take the bus to bring you directly back to Okutama station.
Some practical tips: Dress comfortably in breathable clothing and sturdy hiking shoes. Carry plenty of water and snacks, there are no stores or restaurant during the hike but at the end near the lake there are. Plan your hike to coincide with the season, as each season offers a unique experience. Though I do not recommend hiking in Okutama in winter as ice can form and could make the hike more difficult and dangerous.

So, when you're in Tokyo and feel the need to escape the city's fast pace, remember that Mt. Okutama is waiting to welcome you with open arms, providing an opportunity to explore the unspoiled beauty of Japan's wilderness. Don't miss the chance to embark on this breathtaking adventure.
